Rutin: Vitamin C's Best Friend

Rutin belongs to the category of citrus bioflavonoids. Rutin is only one of the many types of citrus bioflavonoids, which are sometimes collectively referred to as vitamin P. In order to achieve maximum benefit from vitamin C, you should be pairing it up with a bioflavonoid, such as rutin. While there is no evidence that rutin helps with weight loss, it can strengthen your capillaries and prevent bruising. For us klutzes out there, then, rutin can help mask our lack of coordination! Rutin could help to keep your legs looking great-it's supposed to help with varicose and spider veins.

Rutin, like bioflavonoids, is not produced by the body, so you have to actively seek it out. You can get rutin one of two ways: take a supplement or eat the foods in which rutin occurs naturally. Rutin can be found in:

  • Fruits, all citrus fruits but also cherries, apricots, and grapes
  • Vegetables, including onions
  • Nuts
  • Buckwheat (the grain, not the Little Rascal)
  • Legumes
  • Red wine
  • Green tea

It can also be found in plants and barks, which is probably of little help to you unless you're a contestant on Survivor.

Rutin May NOT Be Your Best Friend

Despite the lack of evidence that rutin promotes weight loss, you'll probably come across listings on Ebay hocking rutin supplements as a weight loss aid. Your first clue that you should be skeptical is the Ebay seller's admission that he is "not a doctor."

Here's how the Ebayer claims rutin can trim your waistline: Candida albicans, a yeast found naturally in your body, can easily start over-producing when you eat too much sugar or too many processed foods. The excess Candida albicans causes your waistline to bloat. Rutin, allegedly, is a serial killer of yeast. When the yeast goes away, so does the bloat. In addition to the dubious, not particularly scientific-sounding claims, the seller freely admits that taking rutin can cause you "discomfort." There is no explanation as to what type of discomfort or what it might be attributed to. So, if someone who's not a doctor is advising you to take a supplement in doses that might cause you discomfort, run away as quickly as you can and look for your weight loss cure anywhere that's not EBay.This article discusses the use of Rutin, a type of citrus bioflavonoid. While it boosts the power of Vitamin C, it has does not speed weight loss.
