The Food Behind the Sacred Heart Diet PlanSometimes referred to as the Cabbage Soup Diet or the Miracle Soup Diet, the so-called Sacred Heart diet is based around heavy consumption of a special soup made from tomatoes, beef broth and assorted veggies. The seven-day plan is touted as a quick and easy way to lose at least 10 pounds. Proponents of the plan claim that the soup makes this a "negative calorie" plan. In other words, the soup requires more calories to burn that it adds to your system. It will also supposedly flush your system and rid you of excess toxins. The plan revolves around the soup, in combination with specific fruits, vegetables and proteins taken in exact combinations. It is often said to have originated at the Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, WA. Is the Sacred Heart Program For Real? No, the diet is not recommended by the Sacred Heart Medical Center. In fact, their website contains a disclaimer denying any association with the diet plan. The American Heart Association has a similar disclaimer on their website. It is true that if you stick to this plan for one week, you will most likely lose weight. However, as with any diet plan, the first several pounds are typically water weight, and will be regained quickly when you resume your normal eating patterns. But if you really must fit into that size 8 dress for the reunion, there's probably no harm in trying it for a week. Just check with your health care provider to rule out any medical reasons for avoiding this diet fad. |
