Safe Liquid Diets: Are They Reality or Diet Fiction? In a bid to lose weight, many dieters are turning to strict and so-called safe liquid diets to see the pounds come off. These diets may cause some dramatic results for people who stick with them, but do they really help create long-term health? Most liquid-only diets are extremely limited, calorie-wise. Even if you get three shakes a day, the total calorie count is rarely over 1200, and often way below that. Because of the severity of these diets, most require medical supervision and control. They're also usually reserved for the most medically needy patients as well, such as those who are morbidly obese and in real danger of heart attacks and diabetes. The reality of these liquid diets, though, is that while many people lose weight on them, hardly anyone keeps it off. The University of Pennsylvania released the results of a study that showed that 98% of dieters will regain their weight back within a five-years time period. Those statistics speak to a very real fact: these diets don't teach healthy eating skills. Even if you lose weight on a strict liquid diet, you will inevitably begin to gain the weight back as soon as you start eating real food again. And if you're not careful, you could gain back all of what you lost plus some. Often, the liquid formulas are filled with sugar and complex carbohydrates, too, and don't provide the full range of nutrients your body needs. They can result in vitamin deficiencies and unnatural cravings as your body goes through withdrawals. If used at all, a liquid diet should never be a long-term solution for weight loss. Eating regular, balanced meals and getting regular exercise is the only way to keep weight loss for life. |
