Scarsdale Diet Plan remains popular

The Scarsdale diet plan, also known as the complete Scarsdale medical diet, was first introduced to the dieting world in 1979 with a book written by Dr. Herman Tarnower and Samm Sinclair Baker. The diet is still popular today with its low-carbohydrate, low-calorie plan for weight loss. The book once was a best seller and is still in print.

How it works

The Scarsdale diet is similar to the Atkins diet, and prescribes a weight loss plan that needs to be strictly followed for success. The diet can be followed for seven or fourteen days, and recommends a 700-calorie a day eating plan. Specific requirements are made, for example a grapefruit provides enzymes for your breakfast every day. Also, sugar is replaced with artificial sweeteners.

The Scarsdale diet plan details what you should eat for each meal during the seven or fourteen day cycle. For beverages, coffee or tea are allowed, as well as water and diet sodas. Lean meat is encouraged, especially chicken or fish that is broiled. Fruit salad is allowed for a few days and citrus fruits every day. Vegetables, particularly green vegetables are used sporadically. Dairy and breads are rare.

Criticisms of the diet plan

There are many followers of the complete Scarsdale diet scheme that have seen success with the diet. While the diet will give quick results, it does not seem effective for long-term weight loss. The weight taken off during the seven or fourteen day cycle mostly consists of water, and can often be gained back quickly after discontinuing the diet. Diet cycling such as this can be dangerous to your health. Instead of teaching healthy eating choices that can be followed for a lifetime, the diet concentrates on periods of reduced calorie intake and to such an extreme that it can be unhealthy for some. For permanent weight loss, you need to incorporate total lifestyle changes into your eating habits, as well as participate in regular physical activity.
