How To Tame The Wild Sweet Tooth

The cravings experienced by dieting people generally fall into two categories: sweets and salty. Of the two, the sweet craving is generally the one that drives people stark, staring mad in a very short time. Let that sweet tooth keep squawking, and you'll be spoon-deep in a jar of jelly or eyes-deep in a half gallon of ice cream in no time at all.

When faced with a yen for sugar roughly the size of Jupiter, a little trickery can go a long way toward making it manageable.

First and foremost, you have to be prepared. This means laying in a variety of "legal" sweet treats that you can call upon to help you. Make sure your bases are covered:

  • Chocolate: Buy a block of dark chocolate (or milk, if you insist), the really GOOD stuff. Spend a few bucks on this. Break it into small pieces and freeze it. When the chocolate craving hits, take one piece out, place it on your tongue, and let it melt. Do not chew! Try to make sure you're not doing anything else at the time. Concentrate on the chocolate experience. By the time the chocolate has melted away, your craving will have quieted.
  • Fruity: Get a box of the 100 percent juice popsicles, or the sugar-free "regular" popsicles. The flavor has come a long way from what you remember! They'll put that jelly doughnut or strawberry jam craving to bed.
  • Pudding: Have on hand an assortment of Jell-O fat-free, sugar-free pudding. There are quite a variety of flavors, and they're all quite good. The chocolate fudge flavor will do double duty for killing chocolate cravings, too!
  • Ice cream: Blue Bunny and Skinny Cow are the best in the business when it comes to making diet ice cream bars and treats. Breyer's "Supreme" bars are excellent, also, and come in four gourmet flavors. They'll cost you more than the regular full-fat bars, but they're worth it. I don't recommend the half-gallons of "light" ice cream unless you have an iron will when it comes to portion control. It's very, very easy to overdose on them!

Finally, make sure you keep your freezer and pantry free of "bad" sweets, especially ready to eat ones. Trust me: If they're there, you'll eat them ... sooner or later!
