Deadly Teen Diets: Battling A Poor Body Image

Restrictive diets are not healthy for adults, but teen diets are especially dangerous. Teenagers are often in the middle of growth spurts and adolescent changes. Cycles of starvation and binging can devastate their bodies at a critical time during their development.

Thin line between diets and danger

One of the reasons teen weight loss gimmicks are so dangerous is because many teenagers lack the common sense to know when they are hurting themselves. Preteens tend to engage in more risky behavior, which includes starvation dieting or trying completely nutritionally imbalanced diets fads or dangerous diet pills. If you think your teenager may be developing anorexia or bulimia by following a restrictive teen weight-loss program, seek professional help.

Don't diet in front of your daughter

One of the reasons some teens want to take a teenage weight loss challenge is because they see their mother modeling that behavior. Don't talk about your diets in front of your daughters or skip meals. Model the right behavior when it comes to food. Be sensible and eat a balanced diet. Instead of restricting your calories, burn off calories through exercise.

What do teenagers eat?

According to surveys, not all teens eat breakfast as part of their diets, but when they do they tend to eat cereal or toast. Encourage your teens to eat breakfast even if it is just a fruit smoothie with yogurt.

For lunch, most youngsters enjoy pizza, sandwiches and French fries. Fix your teenager Teen diethealthful diet options such as turkey on sprouted grain bread and fruit.

Don't forbid your teen to eat any junk food or fast food, but explain why it should be limited.

Finally, part of becoming an adult is learning to make friends. If your teenagers want to socialize at a teen hangout, encourage them to do so. If they have not had soda pop and junk food in the house, they might occasionally make a bad food choice when they eat out with friends. But they will probably return to their more healthful diets if you don't nag or push them.
