Can Vegetarian Weight Loss be Safe?

Some people who are vegetarians are afraid that vegetarian weight loss may be almost impossible because it's so hard to get the right nutrients and maintain a balanced eating plan even when not losing weight. The good news is that for most vegetarians, the rules for dieting are similar to those for keeping healthy and balanced, so you can lose weight on a healthy vegetarian diet.

  • Be sure you vary your diet as much as possible. Don't stick primarily with vegetables and fruits. Legumes, nuts and dairy (if you eat it) are also important, as are whole grains.
  • Remember that certain foods such as whole grains and rice will keep you feeling satisfied longer than foods such as lettuce, so be sure to look beyond just calorie count.
  • Avoid sugary or fatty foods - these will really stall your weight loss attempts. If youVegetarian WeightLoss have to have a sweet, substitute a small treat with a bit of raw honey instead of refined sugars.
  • If you do eat dairy, make sure you use cheeses and yogurts that are low in fat and limit the amount of these. Increase vegetables for increased fiber and to add satisfying texture in your diet.
  • Be sure you supplement your diet with the proper supplements - if you are cutting back in general to lose weight, and especially if you limit dairy, you may be lacking in certain important nutrients, especially vitamins B12, B6, C and D.

If you keep these rules of thumb in mind, you should be able to eat a healthy, flavorful vegetarian diet that will help you lose weight.
