Vitamin E Helps You Maintain Your Athletic Prowess

Losing weight starts with being fit and healthy. And being fit and healthy starts with proper nutrition. Most of us don't get all the vitamins we need from the foods that we eat. So, next time you walk down the dietary supplement aisle at the grocery store, don't forget to pick up some Vitamin E. Vitamin E doesn't get the publicity that the superstar Vitamin C does, but getting enough Vitamin E will greatly improve your health. For instance, Vitamin E:

  • Neutralizes free radicals in the body
  • Helps keep your circulatory system healthy
  • Aids in wound healing by promoting proper blood clotting
  • Helps lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and strokes

Most important to a dieter is the fact that a Vitamin E deficiency could actually keep you Vitamins Efrom exercising. Take a look at some of these symptoms of Vitamin E deficiency, and you'll see why a lack of Vitamin E in your diet will get you picked last in gym class:

  • Impaired reflexes
  • Difficulty walking
  • Impaired coordination
  • Weak muscles
  • A lack of sense of limb position

Basically, you need Vitamin E if you don't want to be a klutz! Seriously, though, you can see that a Vitamin E deficiency could seriously hinder your ability to exercise or participate in sports. Being physically active is the most important thing you can do to stay in shape and lose weight.

But you don't want to overdo it either. Too much of this vitamin has its own health risks, including nausea and fatigue. So how much do you need? Women need 8 milligrams daily and men should get 10. One way to meet your daily requirement is to eat some of these foods:

  • Vegetable oil
  • Margarine
  • Avocados
  • Egg yolks
  • Nuts
  • Peanut butter

Speaking of peanut butter and Vitamin E, there's a new diet out there claiming you can lose weight by eating peanut butter. For us peanut butter lovers, this is very exciting news. Peanut butter makes the top 10 forbidden foods list of almost every diet! And if you needed another excuse to eat peanut butter, it's rich in Vitamin E, which is (-the vitamin, not the peanut butter-) great for your heart.
