A Million and One Ways to Lose Weight - Which Ones Work?

With America tipping the scales of obesity, the diet industry is pumping out products and programs as fast as it can in the hopes of becoming the next weight-loss miracle. Books, diet plans, exercise programs, natural supplements, prescription drugs, and even spandex bodysuits offer the promise of a slimmer, healthier you. So-called experts disagree on the best ways to lose weight.

But anyone who listens to the news once in a while knows that there are too many diets and products out there that are actually detrimental to your health, and that have unfortunately caused disease and death.

While experts don't agree on the one best diet plan, most will agree that a miracle cure does not exist. Most weight-loss professionals worth their salt will advise you that losing weight too quickly is a recipe for gaining it back again just as quickly, and that eating only one or two types of food in enormous amounts, even if it's celery, just won't be good for you in the long run.

So what should you do? Here are a few things to look for:

  • A healthy plan will focus on a well-balanced diet with lots of variety: lean meats, dairy products, and fruits, veggies, and grains.
  • A healthy plan will not try to starve you. Extremely low calorie diets are dangerous, and no way to lose weight safely. If you feel faint or dizzy, or have extreme hunger, the diet is not a good one.
  • A healthy weight loss plan will recommend some exercise. No one can stay thin for long on dieting alone. Exercise has so many benefits for weight-loss and maintenance, as well as for your bones, joints, muscles and heart. Be sure to check with your doctor before trying to lose weight.
