Understanding Weight Loss Aids

Ask ten people to explain weight loss aids, and you'll get ten different explanations. This is because there are so many different types available today, and each kind works in a unique way. We've outlined the basic types for you to give you a head start on understanding weight loss products and how they can help you.

Diet Pills

The most commonly used diet aid available without a prescription. Most of them suppress the appetite while increasing the metabolism so that you'll burn off calories more quickly. There are a few diet pills available that will partially block the absorption of fat in the digestive tract, although these have more troublesome (but not dangerous) side effects such as diarrhea and gastric discomfort.

Be sure you talk to your doctor before taking any these - side effects such as nervousness, insomnia and stomach upset can be merely troublesome, or they can become serious. On the other hand, they can give your willpower a boost if you need it.

Diet Patches

Based on the same principle as diet pills, diet patches are applied to the body once a month and are time-released into the blood stream to act as an appetite suppressant and metabolism booster. These are good for people who have trouble remembering to take a diet pill twice a day and like the convenience, although they can be pricey.

Body Wraps

Just like the spa treatment, an at-home body wrap involves slathering on a cream that helps to tone and tighten skin, then wrapping yourself in plastic wrap for about an hour. Yes, you'll lose inches almost immediately - but most of it will simply be water-weight that you've sweated out. It does help tighten and detoxify the skin, but the weight loss benefits are only temporary and minimal.

Bariatric Surgery

Weight loss surgery usually involves making the stomach smaller, whether through "stomach stapling" or an intestinal bypass. Either of these methods means that you can only eat very small portions of food at a time - sometimes only a few bites at each meal. This is a major surgical procedure and is usually only recommended when all other avenues have failed because of the risks involved. It should be considered only if you are extremely obese and your weight has become a threat to your health because it requires months of readjusting your eating habits after recovery from surgery.

Nutritional Diets

A healthy, nutritious diet combined with exercise is the best way to lose weight, but most people have trouble with this approach. Consulting a licensed nutritionist costs some money, but it will be less than the cost of trying a few different fad diets and then gaining the weight back. Nutritionists educate you on a new way of eating that is compatible with your lifestyle and focuses on keeping the weight off after it's lost and staying healthy.

To determine which weight loss programs or diet aids are best for you, talk to your doctor and do some research.
