Weight Loss Facts: Separate Fact From Hype

Weight loss facts can be hard to locate since there is so much information online about this subject, much of it seeming to contradict the other information you just read. Should you gorge on meat and avoid the bread, or eat lots of grain and avoid the meat? You can find literally dozens of sites for each claim. When surfing the Internet to find information on weight loss, ask yourself a few questions every time you come across a site:

  • Does this advice make sense? If you come across a site that gives advice that seems to defy common sense, or promise something that's too good to be true, then you should play it safe and ignore it. A cabbage soup diet will make you lose weight. It will also cause severe vitamin deficiencies and is technically akin to starving yourself. Translation: not a good idea.
  • Is this a fad diet site? If it is a fad diet site, then every article is going to show their methods in a positive light. Look around for articles arguing against that diet and see which one seems to be more grounded in facts rather than a sales pitch.
  • Who is giving advice? A fad diet site is not the best place to get advice, but a web site that compares several diets or is funded by a nutritional watch dog group might offer advice that is usable. Look for doctors' credentials, or reputable web sites. There are still good places online to find out facts about weight loss.

Consider all the words carefully. Does a diet mention a healthy life style, or just weight loss? There is a huge difference between the two, and unfortunately not enough distinction is made, as many assume weight loss means healthy and that is not always the case. On the Internet especially it is important to read between the lines and remember that anything that sounds like a sales pitch probably is.
