The Real Deal on Weight Loss and Low Carb Diets

The first thing to remember when dieting is that there is no quick fix. Ever. To date, there has been no magic pill or eating program that has worked with 100% success for everyone who tried it. In fact, a lot of the programs and pills touted as the next miracle have actually been detrimental to health and well-being. Weight loss on a low carb diet is possible, but you should be aware that not all experts agree on the best plan.

Low carb diets have come and gone for decades now, with the most notorious one being the Atkins Diet. While the diet plan isn't really as extreme as critics claim, it has become infamous for its adherents' meals rich with steak, bacon, cheese, and butter and little or no veggies or grains.

Many people have lost lots of weight on low-carb diets, but the jury is still out on the is a low carb diet right for you?long-term effects of any diet filled to bursting with saturated fats. While Atkins and other low-carb experts recommend a diet of lean meats and "good" carbs, meaning vegetables, many dieters never make that change for good, and rely more on high-fat foods instead of trying to train themselves to eat a more overall healthy diet.

Even if you don't choose to try an extreme low carb diet, it's always a good idea to cut down on sugars and starches. Refined carbohydrates, like processed foods, white flour, and white rice, don't contain a lot of beneficial nutrients like their whole-grain neighbors. And sugar has been shown to wreak havoc on insulin levels, which can cause weight gain and even diabetes over time.

As with any diet, the best way to lose weight is with a well-balanced program that focuses on lean meats, lots of vegetables and fruit, and whole grains.
