Weight Loss Surgery is the Final Chance for Some

Weight loss surgery has been making the news quite a bit lately, and some people - especially women - have explored this option for cosmetic reasons. But surgery for weight loss was never designed to help people lose a few extra pounds, or even fifty pounds. It is a procedure that should be considered only for health reasons. Doctors perform it only for people who are at least 100 pounds overweight and suffering from health problems due to their excessive weight.

  • Gastric Bypass Surgery involves literally bypassing a section of the large intestines (where much of the nutrients and calories in food are absorbed). The stomach is reattached to a section of the small intestines so that less of the food eaten is absorbed by the body.
  • Stomach Stapling sounds primitive but is actually an advanced surgical procedure to fold over and staple or suture a portion of the stomach so that only a small "pouch" is open to accept food. Because of this, you feel full and satisfied more quickly and eat far less food.
  • Banding is a more recent variation on stomach stapling. It uses the same principle, but a band is used to close off part of the stomach. Because the lap-band is adjustable, the stomach area can be enlarged at a later time if it needs to be.

All three types of weight loss surgery (sometimes called bariatric surgery) are drastic and, like any surgery, involve certain risks. They also mean that your eating lifestyle will have to permanently change. After surgery you will have to eat smaller meals, eat more slowly and chew all foods thoroughly to prevent vomiting and complications. If you need to lose 150 pounds, however, it can be a wonderful procedure - and it will help you keep the weight off permanently, improving your health significantly.

The only way to know if surgery is right for you in your struggle to lose weight is to talk to your doctor. He or she can talk to you about the pros and cons of this drastic solution to your weight problem.
