Weight Loss by Numbers Could Mean Long-Term Success

You've heard the term "safety in numbers." Now a recent study has shown that dieters are more likely to stick to their eating plan and lose weight when they are part of support group. In a study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), researchers sought to answer three specific questions:

  • Do commercial diets work?
  • How much weight do people lose on commercial diets?
  • How long will the weight stay off?

The results showed that dieters who follow programs that include group meetings (including Weight Watchers) are more likely to lose weight, and keep it off, than dieters who go it alone.

Making the Numbers Work for You

Are you looking for some group support for your weight loss? There are a number of weight loss programs out there than offer weekly meetings or other kinds of group support, including:

  • Weight Watchers
  • Online diet programs like eDiets
  • TOPS program (Take Off Pounds Sensibly)
  • Other support-based programs like the Rosemary Conley plan in the UK

Whatever program you choose, remember that there is weight loss strength in numbers. Always consult your health care provider before starting any diet program, and set up a schedule to monitor your health while you are losing weight. Keep your diet balanced with a good mix of fresh fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grain breads and cereals. Add in some exercise and you'll soon be saying goodbye to those unwanted pounds.
