Diet pills: more trouble than value

When used under the supervision of your physician in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise regimen, diet pills can be effective-for at least the short term. However, benefits of diet pills weaken over time, as the body tends to adjust to the effects of the pills. In many countries, the over-the-counter diet and weight loss pill industry is growing quickly, due to the demand for quick-fix diets. In the United States, diet pills are classified as food supplements and not drugs, so are somewhat unregulated. For this reason, if taken for long periods of time or if taken improperly, diet pills can be dangerous.

Dangers of diet pills

The side effects and dangers of diet pills and weight loss pills can vary enormously from user to user. Ingredients and dosage instructions vary greatly from pill to pill as well. Side effects vary as a result and can include nervousness, tremor, depression, diarrhea, rapid heartbeat, and elevated blood pressure or even heart failure and heart attack.

Are prescription diet pills safer?

Though better regulated by your physician and clinical studies, prescription diet pills can be as dangerous as over-the-counter pills and many of the same side effects are evident. In addition, with prescription diet pills, accidental overdose is a possibility. Also, both prescription and non-prescription diet pills can interact with other medications you are taking. These interactions can be dangerous. If you are given prescription diet pills, be sure your physician closely monitors your weight loss and watches for any adverse side effects caused by the pills.

Are herbal diet pills better than non-herbal pills?

Not necessarily. Herbal diet pills, or pills containing "natural" ingredients, are not necessarily safer than other diet pills. In fact, some herbal ingredients can lead to dangerous allergic reactions in some users. Talk to you doctor before trying any herbal supplement, whether you want to use it for diet or other reasons.

Should I use diet pills?

If diet pills are not used with a proper weight loss program that includes healthy eating and exercise, they probably won't work. Indeed, some pills can even cause weight gain. If you're interested in taking diet pills, talk with your physician. Only he or she can determine if the diet pills will work for you without any adverse effects.

Should children use diet pills?

Children should not use diet pills without the recommendation and support of their physician. In fact, diet pills can be dangerous when used improperly by a child. The best way to control weight in children is through a healthy diet and exercise plan.
