The Atkins Nutritional Approach, also known as the Atkins diet, is a controversial high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet. It was made popular by Dr. Robert Atkins in a series of books, starting with Dr. Atkins' Diet Revolution.

What is the theory behind the low carb diet?

According to Atkins for instance, many overweight people may be "insulin resistant." Low carbohydrate diets, like the Atkins plan, focus on the reduction and/or elimination of carbohydrates, particularly those carbohydrates found in packaged and processed foods. Instead of these "bad" carbs, the diet emphasizes protein.

What is Ketosis?

By drastically reducing carbohydrate intake, the body begins a process called ketosis. In ketosis, the body burns fat for fuel. According to Atkins, ketosis affects insulin production, which in turn prevents more fat from forming. Once the body begins ketosis, it uses fat for fuel more efficiently, and cravings for carbohydrates diminish.

What are the phases of the Atkins diet?

Like the South Beach diet, the Atkins diet uses phases. The phases are:

  • Phase 1: Induction, which is the first 14 days of the diet. During this phase, some users may lose up to 15 pounds. Carbohydrates are limited to 20 grams a day. The only carbohydrates allowed during the induction phase are low-carbohydrate vegetables, such as lettuce, broccoli, and tomatoes.
  • Phase 2: Ongoing weight loss, which allows for an increase of carbohydrates by five grams.
  • Phase 3: Pre-maintenance, in which the user tests foods to see how his or her body responds to them. If weight gain doesn't result after trying these food, the user can add these foods back into the diet.
  • Phase 4: Maintenance, in which the user's weight goal and overall health are maintained.

Why do some people think low carb diets are unhealthy?

Low carbohydrate diets are popular, but they tend to be controversial because they require restrictive eating.

How do I know if a low carb diet is right for me?

While diets low in carbohydrates can lead to rapid weight loss, it's important to talk with your physician before starting a low carb diet. The restrictive nature of the low carb diet may not be a healthy diet plan for you due to past or present health issues. And, as with any diet, your doctor is likely to recommend an exercise regimen to complement your weight loss plan.

Should children try low carbohydrate plans to lose weight?

Children need carbohydrates for growth and development. Only their physician should recommend low carb diets for children.
